Luigi Palmieri.

Luigi Palmieri (born April 22, 1807 in Faicchio , Kingdom of Naples , † September 9, 1896 in Naples ) was an Italian meteorologist , seismologist and volcanologist .

He studied physics, mathematics and philosophy at the University of Naples and became professor of logic and metaphysics there in 1847 . From 1855 to 1896 he was director of the Vesuvius Observatory near Naples.

He became known in particular through improved measuring devices, such as an electromagnetic seismograph and devices for measuring electrical voltages in the atmosphere.

In 1882 Palmieri succeeded in detecting the element helium on earth for the first time through the spectral analysis of Vesuvius lava .

The Palmieri moon crater is named after him.
