Macedonio Melloni (born April 11, 1798 in Parma , † August 11, 1854 in Portici near Naples ) was an Italian physicist .

Life

Melloni mainly worked on thermal radiation , also magnetism of rocks , electrostatic induction and photography .

He was awarded the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society in 1834 . From 1835 he was a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences , from 1839 a foreign member of the Royal Society . Melloni was the first director of the Vesuvius Observatory ( Osservatorio Vesuviano ), opened in 1841 , the first volcanological institute in the world. In 1836 he became a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg and the Prussian Academy of Sciences . In 1842 he received the Prussian order Pour le Mérite . In 1845 he was elected to the Royal Society of Edinburgh and in 1849 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Melloni died of cholera in 1854 .
