Dieter Richter (2006)

Dieter Richter (born December 24, 1938 in Hof , Bavaria) is a German Germanist and author .

Life

Richter studied German , classical philology and theology at the University of Munich and the University of Göttingen . After doing his doctorate with Hans Neumann and working as an assistant in Göttingen , he was appointed professor for critical literary history and literary methodology at the University of Bremen in 1972 . The initial focus of his scientific work was the German philology of the Middle Ages (especially sacred literature). In connection with the re-establishment of the University of Bremen, he dealt with problems of university reform and a critical redefinition of German studies and its fields of work and methods. This meant that previously scientifically neglected, but socially influential text genres (especially children's and popular literature) became interesting. Works on fairy tale research and the history of childhood were created . Since the 1990s and in connection with various guest professorships at Italian universities and the collaboration in southern Italian research institutions, Richter has increasingly been concerned with topics of the Grand Tour , the history of German-Italian relations and regional studies of southern Italy, especially the Naples area . The methodological starting point of his more recent work is an integrative concept of cultural history in which approaches from literary and art history, ethnology and material historical research merge.

In addition to his work as an author and translator (including the Neapolitan fairy tales by Giambattista Basile ), Richter is also known as a curator of various cultural and historical exhibitions in Germany and Italy. He is one of the founding members of the group The Red Elephant .

Richter has been retired and freelance since 2004. He was married and has two children, lives in Bremen and is an honorary citizen of the city of Amalfi . On June 2, 2008, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic . For his book The South. History of a Cardinal Direction , he received second place in the 2009 NDR Culture Non-Fiction Prize .
