The Istituto nazionale di geofisica e vulcanologia (INGV) ( German "National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology") is a state-run geoscientific research institute in Italy based in Rome .

Tasks and organization

INGV, overseen by the Italian Ministry of Education and Research , is active in the fields of geophysics , volcanology , seismology and geochemistry . As part of the Italian civil protection , the INGV is responsible for the seismological and volcanological observation of the Italian national territory. It therefore maintains a number of geophysical observatories, earthquake observatories and volcanic observatories , including the Vesuvius Observatory near Naples and the "National Earthquake Center". These facilities are subordinate to branches in Milan , Bologna , Pisa , Naples, Catania and Palermo , or directly to the headquarters in Rome.

history

The INGV was founded in 1999. It was created by merging the previously independent Istituto nazionale di geofisica with three research institutes of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche and the Vesuvius Observatory founded in 1841.
Carlo Doglioni became president of the INGV in April 2016.
