The Wirchensee is a lake in the course of the Schlaube between Groß Muckrow in the west and Treppeln in the east in the Oder-Spree district in Brandenburg . It is the highest lake in the Schlaubetal Nature Park .
Name interpretation
Werchenow refers to the Old Sorbian vírchní or the Old Low Sorbian ẘerchny = above, located at the summit and describes the location of the lake. In the period between 1370 and 1420, the village of Vifchnov , which was also located on the lake and reflects this name, became desolate .
The name of the lake got different spellings: 1370 Wertheno et stagno ibidem , 1372 Werchenaw et stagno ibidem , 1572 Wirchenauer See . There is even a list of lakes in the Schlaubetal in 1249, from which one can assume that the Wirchensee was also meant by ad lacum altiorem tribule . In the translation of 1336 we read about the upper Se Trebule . Under Werchen-See we find Tribule - the upper lake also on the Schenkische maps , which confirms the assumption.
Surroundings
The water surface of the Wirchensee was once larger and stretched to the north almost to the Schlaubemühle, to the south to the Wirchenwiesen. By gradually cutting into the Schlaube, the outflow of the water increased, the lake level fell and the lake area became smaller. The uppermost Mühlensee, the ( Stubbenloch ), was created by a damming , separated in the northern part by a headland ( Kleiner Horst ). In the middle of the lake there is a peninsula accessible from the east bank ( Großer Horst ), on which there is a hotel. The stump hole is also fed by the Schlaube.
On the Schlaube, near the northwest bank of the Wirchensee, the nature park administration is located in the former residential building of the Schlaubemühle . It was the first mill on the Schlaube to be mentioned as dy mole zu Werchenow in 1420 . In the Middle Ages, the water was dammed here in order to operate the grinding and cutting mill . Colloquially, it is also clever .
An approximately four-kilometer-long nature trail, which is equipped with numerous information boards, leads around the lake. Another path runs from the Schlaubemühle through the very pristine forest to just before the Kieselwitzer Mühle. This trail brings hikers closer to the legends of Niederlausitz and tells about the Ludki or Luttchen . Presumably the legends go back to the pushed back Germanic inhabitants, who led a very withdrawn life under the settling Wends . The lake, which is surrounded by mixed forest, is very rich in nutrients, as the underwater vegetation has been largely destroyed by its earlier use as an intensive fish farming area .
fishing
From July 1st of each year, the lake may be sailed with watercraft without their own propulsion power , which are only issued by the hotel. Canoes , kayaks , inflatables or rafts are examples of watercraft without their own propulsion power . You are not allowed to bring your own, and bathing is not permitted. Fishing is permitted under special consideration of the protection provisions of the Schlaubetal Nature Park. However, the number of annual tickets that can be issued is limited to 30. Interested parties should contact the hotel.
The lake is banned for part of the year in order not to disturb the ospreys and sea eagles . Despite the eagles, anglers find strong carp . As in all other lakes that were used by the mills, eel , perch , pike , tench , catfish and pikeperch can be found .
history
In the vicinity of the Schlaube spring , a little west of the Wirchenwiesen, are the remains of the RAD camp labor service department 3/83 Wirchensee. Under the direction of G. Lohde and Unterfeldmeister Eck , the conscripts were among other things responsible for carrying out the earthworks in the urn burial site near Groß Muckrow . In the Mühlenberg burial ground, humpback urn graves with grave goods were found from the older Lusatian culture . The finds were given to the district collection of the local history museum in Lübben . The site was known since the chief preacher Karl Krüger found a hump urn decorated with dots and lines there in the summer of 1890. From 1935 the RAD camp consisted of ten barracks, two small houses of the camp leaders on the lake. The remains of the suction system for the water supply and the septic tank of the camp can still be found. Up to the end of the Second World War , the labor service consisted of general forestry work, digging, but also resin-cutting the trees. In the more recent past the area was inaccessible to the population as a wilderness area , behind it actually hid the conspiratorial object Baikal , among other things "courses" for armed underground fighting took place, for which purpose Chileans came to the object until the summer of 1989. Günter Wurm , who owned the guest house in Siehdichum , owned a hunting lodge and a private hunting area of the MfS here .
