history

The village was first mentioned in 1335 under the then name Varzio . The village was the main town of the municipality or Vicinia Pedemonte in the Middle Ages . After the division of 1464 it belonged to the patriziato maggiore of Pedemonte and Tegna and to the patriziato maggiore of Pedemonte and is still called Terra di mezzo today, in contrast to Cavigliano (terra in cim a) and Tegna (terra in fondo). Verscio has been a political municipality since 1803. The Orelli and Magoria families of Locarno had basic rights there, which are mentioned in 1525; they had it since 1213 as a fiefdom from the Bishop of Como .
