Maggia is a municipality and a village in the county Maggia , vallemaggia , the Swiss canton of Ticino .
geography
The community is located in the lower and central part of the Maggia Valley northwest of Locarno . The different districts lie on both sides of the Maggia river .
history
It was first mentioned in 1200 as de madia , in 1225 the place was mentioned as Madiis and in 1270 as Madia . The name is traced back to the month of May (Italian Maggio).
The municipality of Maggia was created on April 4, 2004 through the merger of the previous municipalities of Aurigeno , Coglio , Giumaglio , Lodano , Maggia (former municipality) , Moghegno and Someo .

At the end of 2004 the municipality had 2358 inhabitants. Of these, 2115 (= 89.7%) were Swiss citizens and 243 immigrants from other countries.

The municipal council consists of five people. There is also a municipal parliament .
traffic
Most of the districts of the community can be accessed via line 315 of the FART Locarno-Bignasco-Cavergno . Most of the districts are located on the main road from Locarno through Vallemaggia.
Attractions
- Parish Church of San Maurizio, separated from the Collegiate Church of San Vittore in Muralto around 1000 . The building, consecrated to Saint Mauritius in 1636, was expanded in 1855 (facade) and 1881 (monumental staircase) and restored in 1996–1998.
- Oratory of Santa Maria delle Grazie or "di Campagna", built in 1510 on the site of an earlier chapel, contains frescoes from the time it was built and votive pictures by Giovanni Antonio Vanoni .
- former stable of the Martinelli, with a fresco with the birth of Jesus, later Casa Martinelli from the 17th century, in the meantime a school house, today a retirement home
