Community merger

geography

The place is located in the lower part of the Valle Maggias on the left bank of the Maggia , ten kilometers northwest of Locarno . It consists of the districts Gordevio-Briee (312–343 m above sea level) north and Gordevio Villa (313–361 m above sea level) south of the Ri di Gei stream . A number of Alpine settlements also belong to the municipality; the most important are Malai (1141 m above sea level), Brunescio (1311 m above sea level) and Aiarlo di Dentro (1484 m above sea level). Most of the municipal area consists of the Alps, wooded slopes and mountainous landscapes. The northern border of Gordevio leads in a north-easterly direction from the Maggia over the Cima di Aiarlo (1904 m above sea level) and the Cros Pizzitt to the Cima di Nimi (2191 m above sea level).

In the east the community borders on the Locarno district . The highest peak is the Pizzo d'Orgnana (2219 m above sea level). Other peaks are the Mött di Pegor (2169 m above sea level) and the Pizzo di Corbella (2066 m above sea level). The southern border leads from the Maggia in an easterly direction over the Pianosto (1338 m above sea level) to the Cima della Trosa (1869 m above sea level). Of the total municipal area of 1925 ha, only 2.1% is settlement area. A full 60.9% of the municipal area is covered by forest and wood, another 21.0% are unproductive areas. A mere 15.9% is agricultural land (including the Alps).

Gordevio borders in the southwest, west and north on the municipality of Maggia , in the east on Lavertezzo , Corippo and Mergoscia in the district of Locarno and in the south on Avegno.

history

Gordevio is first mentioned in 1200 under the name Gordauio . When the Valais wanted to conquer the Maggia Valley in 1484, the inhabitants of Gordevio provided 18 men of the defense contingent. From the early 16th century until 1798, the community belonged to the Ennetbirgische Vogteien , then until 1803 to the Canton of Lugano . Since then, as part of the Vallemaggia district , it has been part of the canton of Ticino . The current name Gordevio appears for the first time in a document from 1616.

population

Population numbers

Population development
year 1591 1709 1765 1801 1850 1950 1970 1990 2000 2004 2007
Residents 230 650 272 244 373 266 354 671 798 812 832

The number of inhabitants grew strongly in the 17th century (1591–1709: almost tripled). After that, the scarce land could no longer feed the many people. More than half of all residents left the place and emigrated to northern Italy, Rome and Palermo (1709–1801: - 62.5%). By 1850 the population grew again (1801–1850: + 52.9%). After that, mass emigration to California began until 1930 . Many residents who did not want to go overseas migrated to the industrial areas (especially to Locarno). Population growth began in 1950 and continues to this day. The reasons for this are the motorization, which made commuter traffic to Locarno easier, as well as the need of many Locarno city dwellers to live in the countryside (1950–2004: + 205.3%).

languages

The population speaks a local variant of Italian. Despite immigration from German-speaking countries, the proportion of Italian speakers only decreased from 86.16% to 84.59% between 1970 and 2000. The proportion of German speakers fell from 12.71% to 10.03% in the same period despite an absolute growth from 45 to 80 people. This is an atypical trend for the Locarno / Valli region and is related to the high level of immigration from the region. In 2000, 3.63% of residents also stated French as their main language.

Religions - denominations

In earlier times all residents were members of the Roman Catholic Church. This has changed as a result of leaving the church and immigration from other regions in Switzerland and abroad. Today (as of 2000) 79.20% are Roman Catholic and 6.52% Evangelical Reformed Christians. In addition, there are 10.03% non-denominational. 3.76% of the population gave no information about their creed.

Origin - nationality

At the end of 2004, 732 of the 812 inhabitants of Gordevio (= 90.15%) were Swiss citizens and 80 immigrants from other countries. At the last census in 2000, 93.23% were Swiss citizens, 55 of whom were dual citizens. The largest groups of immigrants come from Italy, Croatia and Germany.

politics

The municipal council consists of five people. These are:

  • Mario Laloli (Mayor)
  • Luca Giovanettina (Vice President)
  • Michele Donati
  • Pietro Zanoli
  • Stefano Zoppi

economy

Agriculture could only ever feed a small number of inhabitants. That is why emigration (and the transfer of money from emigrants) played an important role until 1930. Today there are only a small minority of farmers. In earlier decades, industry and commerce played an important role. However, the majority of employees earn their living by working in service professions. While in 1970 a majority of 54.6% of the working population worked in Gordevio themselves, today over 71% of the working population are commuters (especially to Locarno, Losone and Ascona). Tourism does not play a significant role.

traffic

The Maggia Valley Railway operated from 1907 to 1965 . Since it switched to bus operation, Gordevio has been served by the FART bus line 10 , Locarno-Bignasco-Cavergno . The place is on the main road from Locarno through Vallemaggia.
