Dohuk ( Kurdish دھۆک Dihok or Duhok ; Arabic دهوك, DMG Dahūk ; classic Syrian ܢܘܗܕܪܐ Nohadra ) is the capital of the Dahuk Governorate in the Kurdistan Autonomous Region in Iraq .

The big city has about 500,000 inhabitants. It is 585 m high and is 470 km from Baghdad . The name Dohuk means "small village" in Kurdish . The city is the seat of the University of Duhok , which is one of more than eleven Kurdish universities in the Autonomous Region of Kurdistan.

history

The rise of the city began in 1236, when Hasan Beg Saifadin to the Badinan - Principality joined. In 1842 the principality was dissolved by the Ottomans and the city was attached to Mosul . In 1898, according to a report, there were eleven small and private schools in the city, two of which were Christian and two Jewish. In 1920 there were only five elementary schools open to girls in all of Iraq, and one of them was in Dohuk.

Culture

From September 22 to 24, 2005, a cultural festival took place in Dohuk for the first time, to which Kurdish writers from all countries were invited.

The city has hosted the Duhok International Film Festival ( Duhok IFF ) since 2011 . At this film award, mainly Kurdish films are presented and awarded. The award ceremony is organized by the Ministry of Culture of Kurdistan (especially the Department of Cinema) in cooperation with mîtosfilm .

Sports

The local football club SC Dohuk currently plays in the top Iraqi football league . In 2010 the club won the championship for the first time in its history.
