Canton of Lugano
The canton of Lugano with its capital Lugano was a canton that existed in the Helvetic Republic from 1798 to 1803. It included the four Italian-speaking bailiffs Lugano , Mendrisio , Locarno and Valmaggia .
After only five years, with the act of mediation dictated by Napoleon in 1803, the two cantons Bellinzona and Lugano were united under the new name Canton Ticino (Ticino) .
