Qualification for the 1998 World Cup

Participant in qualifying for the 1998 World Cup

The qualifying matches for the men's soccer World Cup in 1998 took place from March 10, 1996 to November 29, 1997 . 166 of XXX countries (all members of FIFA ) had started the World Cup qualification, only 30 national teams remained at the end of the qualification. Brazil as defending champions and France as hosts complete the field of finalists. All qualification options include either the championship or the cup system.

Location of Europe

The nine group winners and the best runner-up in the group are directly qualified for the 1998 World Cup. The other eight runners-up play four play-offs with home and away legs. The winners of the play-offs are also qualified for the 1998 World Cup. To determine the best runners-up in the group, only the games against the first, third and fourth group will be rated. Host France qualifies automatically.

North, Central American and Caribbean Zones / CONCACAF

Location of North and Central America

All three teams from the north zone (Mexico, USA, Canada) were seeded for the CONCACAF semi-finals . Costa Rica, El Salvador and Honduras were also seeded from the central zone for the CONCACAF semi-finals . All 20 teams in the Caribbean zone identified four further participants for the CONCACAF semi-finals using the knockout system . Four other teams from the central zone identified two more participants for the CONCACAF semi-finals in play-offs . The 12 participants in the CONCACAF semi-finals determined the six participants in the CONCACAF final round in three groups of four . The three group winners in the CONCACAF final round qualified for the 1998 World Cup in France.

Location of Asia

In the first round of the Asia zone, 36 teams played in four groups of three and six groups of four to win the group. The ten group winners reached the second round of the Asia zone. This was played in two groups of five, the two group winners of which qualified directly for the 1998 World Cup. The two runners-up in the group had to play a playoff game on a neutral spot, the winner of which also qualified for the 1998 World Cup. The loser had to go to the intercontinental relegation against the Oceania winner. The winner of this relegation also qualified for the 1998 World Cup in France.
