The Solomon Islands at the World Cup
The Solomon Islands first participated in a FIFA World Cup when they qualified for the 1994 World Cup in the United States . But already in the first round the team was eliminated against Australia and Tahiti with just one draw (1-1 against Tahiti).
Qualification for the 1998 World Cup in France ended again in the first round for the Solomon Islands. Without a win against Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu , second place in the table behind Papua New Guinea would not be enough for the second round.
The football world championship in 2002 was also not achievable for the team. Against New Zealand , Tahiti, Vanuatu and the Cook Islands , the Solomon Islands won two games and scored 17 goals, but in the end they only finished third.
The qualification for the 2006 World Cup in Germany was quite successful for the Solomon Islands. In the first round, the team played against Tahiti, New Caledonia , Tonga and the Cook Islands and won three of four games. At the end of the first round, the team took first place in the table and moved into the second round. Here the Solomon Islands met Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tahiti and Vanuatu. Since New Zealand lost to Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands reached 2-2 against Australia, they qualified for the relegation. In two games against Australia, however, they lost significantly with 0: 7 and 1: 2 and were eliminated.
In qualifying for the 2010 World Cup , the team was eliminated in the first round, which was played as part of the South Pacific Games. After the group stage ended as group winners, the Solomon Islands lost 3-2 in the semifinals against New Caledonia.
The country again failed to qualify for the World Cup in Brazil four years later . They eliminated in the third qualifying round Oceania as the group bottom.
The team developed under the new Spanish coach Felipe Vega-Arango Alonso and reached the final continental elimination in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia . With a 2-1 win against Papua New Guinea on the last day of the match, they moved into the two finals against New Zealand . They lost the first leg in Auckland with 1: 6.
