The Samoan national soccer team is the selection team of the Pacific island nation of Samoa . They are one of the most unsuccessful teams in the world.
The Samoan association has been a member of the OFC regional association since 1984 and of the world football association FIFA since 1986 .
The first games not recognized by FIFA took place in August 1979 as Western Samoa as part of the South Pacific Games. FIFA names July 1, 1989 as the date for the first two official matches.
So far, the team has not yet managed to qualify for a soccer World Cup . In 2011 he qualified for the OFC Nations Cup for the first time . The team was eliminated after three defeats in the preliminary round.
Samoa at the World Cup
For the first time, Samoa took part in qualifying for the World Cup in 1998 in a preliminary round for a FIFA world tournament. In the Polynesian group, the selection took second place in the table behind Tonga and ahead of the Cook Islands . The team lost the decisive final group game against Tonga 1: 2. This cut meant the end of the Samoans' first appearance at a FIFA tournament.
In the first round of qualifying for the 2002 World Cup , Samoa had to play in a group of five against Australia , Fiji , Tonga and American Samoa . After losing the first group game against Tonga with 0: 1, the team won against American Samoa with 8: 0. Two days later the team lost to Fiji 6-1, the last group game against Australia ended 0:11. This placed Samoa fourth in the table, which resulted in the early elimination.
In qualifying for the 2006 World Cup , the Samoan selection had to compete in group two against Vanuatu , Fiji, Papua New Guinea and American Samoa. After four games, Samoa finished fourth in the table, which also meant elimination.
In group B of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , Samoa only narrowly missed the second round. Against the teams from the Solomon Islands , Vanuatu, Tonga and American Samoa, the Samoan team was able to win twice, but also lost two games and finished third in the table with six points and 9: 8 goals.
In the qualification for the Soccer Oceania Cup 2012, which was considered to be the qualification for the Soccer World Cup 2014 , Samoa was able to prevail against American Samoa , Tonga and the Cook Islands and qualify for the first time for the final round of the Oceania Cup. There Samoa met in June 2012 in Fiji to Vanuatu , New Caledonia and Tahiti . The Samoan team lost all three games and were eliminated as the bottom of the group.
