The New Caledonian national football team is the selection team for the French overseas territory of New Caledonia .
New Caledonia has been a member of the world football association FIFA since 2004 and a full member of the continental association OFC since 2004 (so-called associated membership existed since 1969). New Caledonia has been eligible to take part in soccer World Cups since it became a member of FIFA . The association has participated in the OFC Nations Cup as an associated member since it was founded. So far, the team has not yet managed to qualify for the soccer World Cup. So far, they have qualified six times for the OFC Nations Cup.
The team was victorious in the South Pacific Games soccer tournament in 1963, 1969, 1971, 1987 and 2007. This success, achieved by a 1-0 win in the final over Fiji , entitles the team to participate in the second round of the 2010 World Cup qualification . New Caledonia was able to win the soccer tournament of the games now known as the "Pacific Games" in 2011 as well as in 2015.
The national team also takes part in the Coupe de l'Outre-Mer , the competition for national teams from France's overseas territories . So far the best placement was rank 5 at the 2008 tournament.
New Caledonia at the World Cup
The qualification for the 2006 World Cup in Germany marks the first appearance of a New Caledonian selection in a FIFA world tournament. In Group 1 of the Oceania zone, the team played against the Cook Islands (8: 0), the Solomon Islands (0: 2), Tahiti (0: 0) and Tonga (8: 0). After this round, New Caledonia finished third in the table behind the Solomon Islands and Tahiti, which meant the elimination.
In qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , New Caledonia finished second in the first group behind Fiji (1: 1) and ahead of the Cook Islands (3: 0), Tahiti (1: 0) and Tuvalu (1: 0). With a 3-2 victory in the semifinals of the South Pacific Games over the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia qualified for the second main round of the qualification, which was played as part of the OFC Nations Cup (Fiji was defeated 1-0 in the final of the South Pacific Games ). Fiji and Vanuatu could be kept at a distance with away draws and home wins; New Zealand, however, proved to be stronger and won both games.
