Coupe de l'Outre-Mer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Coupe de l'Outre-Mer ("Overseas Cup ") was a football tournament in which all teams from the following French overseas territories were eligible to participate: Guadeloupe , French Guiana , Martinique , Saint-Martin , Saint Pierre and Miquelon , Réunion , Tahiti ( French -Polynesia ), New Caledonia , Mayotte as well as Wallis and Futuna . Theoretically, the team from the Antilles island of Saint-Barthélemy could have participated, a regional body that has been independent of Guadeloupe since 2007, like Saint-Martin .

Formally, these are only regional selections in the French self-image, because the associations eligible to participate are subdivisions of the French national football association, the Fédération Française de Football (FFF). However, the associations of Tahiti and New Caledonia are also full FIFA members; five others are associated members of a continental association: La Réunion in the African and Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique and Saint-Martin in the North and Central American association .

The FFF acted as the host of the tournament. The competition has been held every two years since 2008 and was held in late summer / early autumn at various locations in Île-de-France . In 2014, the association ended the competition due to the "disappointing results in terms of its external impact".

Competition mode

The participants are drawn into two groups and each play one game against the other group members. There are four points for a win after 90 minutes; in the case of games that are tied at this point in time, a penalty shoot-out takes place without further overtime , the winner of which receives two and the loser receives one point. After the preliminary round, the two group winners contest the final, the two runners-up play for third place. In these placement games there is extra time and possibly a penalty shoot-out if no winner has been determined by then.

Seven of these associations registered for the competition premiere; Saint-Martin, Wallis and Futuna, and Saint Pierre and Miquelon were missing. The tournament took place from September 24th to October 4th, 2008. After the group games, the following final tables resulted:

The third event also saw the final between Réunion and Martinique, whose group victory this time was only due to the best goal difference between three teams with equal points. Réunion only won the cup after a long penalty shoot-out (10: 9) after the game ended 2-2. In the game for third place, Guadeloupe defeated Mayotte 1-0. French Guiana won 2-1 for fifth place and New Caledonia 16-1 for seventh.
