This article deals with qualifying for the 1934 World Cup in Italy .

Overview

Participant in the qualification for the 1934 World Cup

A total of 32 teams had registered for the 1934 World Cup in Italy , including

  • 21 teams from Europe
  • 4 teams from South America
  • 4 teams from North and Central America
  • 1 team from Africa
  • 2 teams from Asia

Three nations withdrew voluntarily, with the result that ultimately only 29 teams took part in the qualifying games. The host of the World Cup, Italy, did not have a fixed starting place for the finals and therefore went into qualification; the world champion Uruguay did not take part in the World Cup.

The 21 European teams were divided into eight groups, including five groups of three and three groups of two. With the exception of Group 1, the two best teams from the groups of three qualified. In the groups of two, the winner from the first and second leg reached the World Cup finals.

Sweden only played the first leg against Estonia and Lithuania, both of which could be won. The return games were rated 2-0 as a victory for Sweden, the games between Estonia and Lithuania were canceled without replacement.

After losing 4-0 in the first leg against the Italians, Greece waived the second leg on home soil. The reason for this is the fact that the Italian officials paid the Greek association a total of 700,000 drachmas in order to forego the second leg in Athens, which would have bothered the Italians because of the long journey in preparation for the World Cup.

Group 5

After the first leg defeat at home, the Polish team did not play the second leg because their government did not give them a travel permit. The reason was border disputes between the two states ( Olsa area ). The game was then rated 2-0 in favor of Czechoslovakia.

Group 8

First of all, all three teams should play one game each against the other two teams, with each team having a home and an away game. Presumably on the initiative of Luxembourg, which figured it had no chance of qualifying, both games against Luxembourg should take place in Luxembourg in order to have a financial success despite the defeats. Since the two best teams in the group would qualify, the game between Germany and France, between which there were political tensions, would then not be necessary. After the teams of Germany and France then also won their games against Luxembourg, the game for the group victory was no longer played due to irrelevance.
