Qualification mode
The qualification for the World Cup in 2002 began on March 28, 2000. Of a total of 198 registered associations, 193 teams started in the World Cup qualification, only 29 remained on November 16, 2001. France as defending champions, South Korea and Japan as hosts automatically qualified for the finals of 32. Myanmar withdrew, Guinea and Guyana were suspended by FIFA.
In six zones, the continental federations of FIFA , the 29 participants were determined through 774 qualifying matches, which, along with South Korea, Japan and France, made up the starting field for the World Cup finals:
Europe / UEFA had 13 direct starting positions plus defending champion France at the World Cup. The 50 teams were divided into five groups of six and four groups of five. The winners of the nine qualifying groups went to the World Cup in South Korea and Japan. The nine runners-up played on 10/14. November 2001 in five play-off games (back and forth) together with the Asian third from five further World Cup finalists.
South America / CONMEBOL had four direct starting places. Ten teams played against each other with a round trip, the best four were directly qualified for the World Cup. The fifth had to play in two qualifying matches against the winner from Oceania / OFC and thus had the opportunity to take part in the final round.
North America - Central America - Caribbean / CONCACAF had three direct starting positions. A total of 35 teams started the qualification. The teams had to prevail in three qualifying rounds. Twelve participants from the first round qualify for the second round. Then the game was continued in three groups of four. The first two in each group advanced to the third round. The six remaining teams played from January 28 to November 11, 2001 in a group against each other with a round trip. The three best qualified for the World Cup finals.
Africa / CAF , had five starting positions at the World Cup. 50 teams determined the 25 participants in the second round in 25 play-off games (first and second leg). The total of 25 teams were divided into five groups of five, from which the respective group winners could qualify for the World Cup.
Asia / AFC , had two direct starting positions plus the two hosts South Korea and Japan. In the first round, 40 teams played in ten groups of four. The ten group winners were in the second round (August 16 to October 19, 2001). The ten teams were divided into two groups of five, the group winners qualified for the World Cup. The two runners-up in the group decided whowas allowed to play another World Cup participantagainst a European group runners-up.
Oceania / OFC did not have a direct launch site. Therefore it was possible that none of the 10 teams from the countries around the fifth continent will take part in the World Cup. Ten teams were divided into two groups of five. The two group winners determined the oceanic representative for the play-off against the South American fifth in a round trip.
