The international soccer match Israel - Austria (often referred to as the "scandal match ") took place in the qualification for the 2002 World Cup on October 27, 2001 in Tel Aviv . After a 1-0 lead for Israel , Austria scored the equalizer in stoppage time to make it 1-1. Thus Austria reached the relegation games instead of Israel .

In the run-up to the game, there were lengthy media discussions due to security concerns about Israel as the venue. Nine players from the Austrian national team, designated as “renegades”, then canceled their participation in the game for safety reasons. Also known is the comment by Hans Huber on the live broadcast for ORF , who was pelted with objects by angry viewers after the late equalizer and commented on this for minutes.

The match between Israel and Austria was the last match in qualifying group 7 for the 2002 World Cup. Spain was already the group winners. Before the game, Austria took second place in the group, which allowed the team to play the relegation games against Turkey. Due to the better goal difference, Israel would have overtaken the Austrians with equal points if they had won.

Already in the European Championship qualification in 2000 there was a duel for promotion to the relegation, whereby Israel, at the time tied with Austria, made the promotion.

The game attracted media interest months before it actually took place due to security concerns about the Tel Aviv venue. The game, originally scheduled for October 7, 2001, was postponed after a Russian passenger plane launched from Tel Aviv was mistakenly shot down over the Black Sea on October 4 . October 27 has been set as the new date for the event.

The cancellation of nine players from the Austrian national team who refused to travel to Israel due to security concerns caused media discussions. The rejection of the players referred to as “renegades” by the Austrian media also met with a response in Israel. For example, the statement "They are afraid, they are afraid, they are afraid" by former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was used in advertisements for the game. The postponement of the game and alleged boycott threats by the Austrian Football Association also caused a stir.

The game in the Ramat Gan Stadium in Tel Aviv, which was sold out to 42,000 spectators , was broadcast by 42 TV channels.

Neither team could score in the first half. In the 56th minute, Shimon Gershon converted a penalty to make it 1-0 for Israel. At this point, Israel was qualified for relegation due to the better goal difference.

In stoppage time, the referee gave Austria a free kick from a distance of 19 meters. Andreas Herzog shot the free kick through the legs of a defender in the wall and scored the decisive 1: 1, which was also the end result and secured Austria's promotion to the relegation games.

In the relegation games Austria was defeated by Turkey in both games (0: 1, 0: 5) and thus missed the World Cup.

Above all, the live commentary by ORF presenter Hans Huber , who commented on the game from Tel Aviv, is known.

According to media reports, the atmosphere in the stadium was already heated up at the beginning of the game due to the long media discussion in advance, but according to Huber, the football fans in the stadium were peaceful throughout the game. After the equalizer, however, Huber's comment box was pelted with objects by angry Israeli fans. The audibly excited Huber used the majority of the remaining airtime to inform the viewer about the objects that were thrown on his commentary box, whereby he repeatedly apologized to the viewer for this description.

An excerpt from the comment:

“In the meantime, I'm being shot at with oranges, with stones, with stones, with all sorts of objects, that will of course be reported to FIFA. [...] I just got - I know it is completely of no interest to you - but an orange just hit me on the head. You don't mind, I know that, at home, but I just want to tell you under what circumstances we work here now. It was completely peaceful, the audience behaved properly, but now the mood is exploding here. [...] I'm just telling you this to document that it is here too ... now all sorts of cups, cans, objects, all sorts of things are still flying towards me. [...] stones, stones, ladies and gentlemen. All I can tell you is that I really haven't seen anything like it before. [...] Now a lighter hit me again and something else, but none of that interests us. [...] We are shown here now. We are sitting back there and have barricaded ourselves because it is simply no longer possible to work here any other way. I'm going back to Vienna now. "
