Status: end of career

Thomas Winklhofer (born December 30, 1970 in Seekirchen am Wallersee ) is a former Austrian football player .

Career

Thomas Winklhofer began his career in his youth at SV Seekirchen in 1945 and came to SV Austria Salzburg as a 17-year-old talented striker . After a year in Salzburg, he moved to the federal youth center in Tyrol and slowly approached the team of FC Swarovski Tirol in the 1991/92 season . From the established Innsbruck players, especially Bruno Pezzey , he was given the name "jackknife" because of his header style. The young talent was not yet able to assert itself with the Innsbruck team, he only made a single championship appearance and was therefore given up to the WSG Wattens satellite club during the current season. There Winklhofer was mostly given a defensive role and changed from a striker to a defender .

In the autumn of 1992 Thomas Winklhofer moved back to Austria Salzburg and, thanks to his athleticism and fighting strength, made the leap into the fighting team. The still largely unknown Winklhofer caused a stir in Austria with a very good performance in the defense of Salzburg when he downright canceled their striker Thomas Flögel in the game against FK Austria Wien . From then on, Winki , as he was called by Otto Barić in Salzburg , became an integral part of the first team and made a total of 22 appearances in the championship in the 1992/93 season.

With Austria Salzburg, the man from Seekirchen also celebrated his greatest successes at club level. The 1.83 m tall defender made almost 30 missions in all of the master years of the former Lehener in 1993/94, 1994/95 and 1996/97 and occasionally scored important goals. With Casino Salzburg he reached the final of the UEFA Cup in 1993/94 and also became a national player. Winki played a total of 21 international matches for the Austrian national team between 1993 and 2001.

In 2001 Winklhofer ventured abroad to the German second division club 1. FC Saarbrücken , for which he was used in a total of 32 games. In 2002 he returned to Salzburg and remained loyal to Austria even in unsuccessful years. When Red Bull took over the club in July 2005, his career in Salzburg seemed threatened by numerous new purchases. Winklhofer also prevailed against his competitors at the age of 35 and was part of the Salzburg team under coach Kurt Jara . A fitting quote from the Salzburg coach: “Winklhofer can pass on his experience to the young players and celebrate great successes again at the end of his career. He deserved it. "

With the championship title in 2007, Winklhofer is the only player who was in the squad for the first four championships of Salzburg.

Private

Thomas Winklhofer is married and has two daughters, Kristin and Karoline. In his free time he devotes himself to climbing and diving in addition to his family . The Seekirchner attaches great importance to his appearance and his hairstyle . He has followed every new trend since his youth and walks out onto the field almost every season with a differently styled head of hair.
