Eyal Berkovic ( Hebrew 'אייל ברקוביץ; * April 2, 1972 in Haifa ; also Berkovich ) is an Israeli soccer coach and former player.

career

Berkovic began his career in 1989 with Maccabi Haifa , where he played in his youth. With the team he won two Israeli championships and three times the State Cup , the national cup. In 1992 he was appointed to the national team for the first time . For the 1993/94 season he was named Player of the Year thanks to his excellent performance.

In 1996 he moved to the Premier League for Southampton FC . After a successful year, he was poached by West Ham United . After two years in London , he moved to Celtic in Glasgow for £ 5.75 million . However, after John Barnes , who had signed him, was replaced by Martin O'Neill , Berkovic sat more on the bench and was loaned to Blackburn Rovers in 2001 . At the end of the season he moved to the English second division for Manchester City , with whom he rose in the first year. In 2002/03, Berkovic was voted Manchester City's Player of the Season. When he fought with coach Kevin Keegan in the 2003/04 season , he was transferred to Portsmouth FC at the end of the season . After only a year and renewed problems with the coach, he went back to Israel to Maccabi Tel Aviv .

Berkovic played 82 times for the Israeli national team and scored 14 goals.

On May 7, 2006, he announced the end of his career. In the summer of 2006 he was hired as the coach of Maccabi Netanja .

Berkovic is married and has two children.
