The Honduran national team has so far participated in the qualifying games for the soccer tournament at the Olympic Games three times : for the 1976 Games in Montreal , 1984 in Los Angeles and 1988 in Seoul . In all qualifying tournaments, the Honduran team failed to qualify for the Olympic Games.

After 1988 the senior national team no longer took part in the Olympic Games and the qualifying games; instead, an Olympic team that was independent of the senior national team played the tournaments. The Olympic team has so far qualified four times for participation in the Olympic Games. In 2000 and 2008 , the Honduran team was eliminated in the preliminary round.

The Olympic team also qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in London and reached the quarter-finals with two draws against Morocco and Japan and a 1-0 win against Spain , where they were eliminated 3-2 against Brazil .

In 2016 the team will take part for the fourth time after the U-23 qualified second in the CONCACAF qualification.

World championships

In the following years, too, the qualification did not succeed: Honduras failed in qualifying for the 1966 World Cup to Mexico , for the 1970 World Cup to El Salvador (after the game there were serious riots with four deaths, which led to the football war between El Salvador Honduras and attracted) by themselves and for the 1974 World Cup in Haiti . For the 1978 World Cup , Honduras withdrew the message prematurely.

Special occurrences

Football war with El Salvador

On June 26, 1969, after a playoff in qualifying for the 1970 World Cup between the Honduran and Salvadoran national teams in Mexico City , serious unrest broke out. The conflict over the immigration of Salvadorans to Honduras, which had been simmering for some time, caused riots after the second semi-final match, which were put down by the El Salvador police and military .

After the unrest that followed the play-off that El Salvador won in extra time, El Salvador decided to launch a military attack on Honduras with the aim of annexing the border areas in Honduras inhabited by Salvadoran emigrants or at least asserting a right of residence for the Salvadorans . The attack began on July 14, 1969, around three weeks after the playoff, and went down in history as the football war . The last international match between the conflicting parties is generally considered to be the trigger for the military escalation, even if the underlying reason for the war was different.

The Organization of American States was able to at least settle the armed conflict after a few days by threatening sanctions, so that the military intervention, sometimes also known as the 100-hour war , ended five days later, on July 18, 1969. In total, it cost 2100 lives, the Central American Free Trade Area was suspended for 24 years and the forced return of 300,000 Salvadorans from Honduras created a humanitarian and socially tense situation in El Salvador.
