Wilson Roberto Palacios Suazo (born July 29, 1984 in La Ceiba ) is a Honduran football player . The former international will play for Miami FC in the North American Soccer League from 2016 . His brothers Milton , Jerry and Johnny were also used for the Honduran national team.

Club career

Wilson Palacios played in the youth of Club Deportivo Victoria and was transferred to Club Deportivo Olimpia in 2002 . At Olimpia, he won several league titles before flying to England in the summer of 2007 to do a trial with Arsenal . On the recommendation of Arsène Wenger , he finally came to Birmingham City and was loaned by Olimpia until January 2008.

On September 22, 2007, Palacios made his Premier League debut in a 0-0 draw against Liverpool FC and in October coach Steve Bruce announced that he wanted to sign the Central American permanently. While Wilson Palacios returned to Honduras for some time after the kidnapping of his youngest brother (see below), Steve Bruce switched to Wigan and was replaced by Alex McLeish . He had seen the Honduran play too seldom to be able to agree to a transfer and therefore declined a permanent commitment.

On January 11th, Palacios was brought by Steve Bruce for about a million pounds to the first division club Wigan Athletic . He stayed there for about a year before moving to Tottenham Hotspur on January 21, 2009 for £ 12m in the Premier League . On August 31, 2011 it was announced that Palacios is moving to league rivals Stoke City .

National team

Palacios has been a permanent member of the Honduran national team for some time . He was with Honduras in the final of the UNCAF Nations Cup 2005 , which was lost to Costa Rica on penalties , and was also part of the permanent staff during the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup . There the team failed, at the top favorites and eventual winner USA with 1: 2, after they defeated Costa Rica 3: 2 in the quarterfinals. Two years later he also took part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup with Honduras , but failed in the quarter-finals against Guadeloupe , the surprise team of the tournament, with 1: 2.

On May 8, 2014, he was appointed to the squad of the Honduran national football team for the 2014 World Cup by coach Luis Fernando Suárez .

Murder of brother

On October 30, 2007, five armed men broke into Palacios 'parents' home in La Ceiba . While they left them tied up, they kidnapped the youngest son of the family, who was 14 years old at the time, Edwin Rene Palacios. In November 2007, the family initially paid £ 125,000, but this did not lead to the hoped-for release of Edwin.

After the move from Wilson Palacios to Tottenham became known, his mother reached out to the kidnappers on television asking for a sign of life. Since it was feared against the background of the conclusion of the contract that new money claims would be made, she stated that Wilson would receive nothing from the transfer fee and that he would only receive his salary. The amount of this salary was not mentioned.

According to the police, a further US $ 500,000 was paid later. But this time, too, there was no release. Instead, Edwin's body was found in May 2009.
