The port city of La Ceiba is located on the north coast ( Caribbean coast ) of Honduras . It has over 200,000 inhabitants and is considered the gateway to the Islas de la Bahía .
The saying " Tegucigalpa thinks, San Pedro Sula works, La Ceiba celebrates", which is common in Honduras , characterizes the city very well - people celebrate at every opportunity.
The name La Ceiba has its origin in a huge Ceiba tree that stood near the beach and provided shade for the dockworkers and the population. The locals like to call the place Ceibita la bella ; translated as: "pretty little Ceiba".
The structure of the city is typical of a Spanish colonial city and takes place in a grid system: There are two parallel main streets (Avenida San Isidro and Avenida 14 de Julio) that are at right angles to the beach. The streets running parallel to the beach are numbered.
Economy and Infrastructure
The Standard Fruit Company , the most important banana exporter from Honduras, has its administrative center in the city and its plantations shape the landscape in northern Honduras. The pineapple grown in the surrounding area is an important agricultural product that, like the bananas, is exported via the port, the second largest in the country.
The city is said to have enormous potential in the development of ecotourism - it is located between several important national parks of Honduras ( Parque Nacional Pico Bonito , Wildlife Reserve Cuero y Salado , Marine Reserve Cayos Cochinos ).
To the west of the city is Golosón Airport .
La Ceiba is the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of La Ceiba . Several universities - public and private - are located in the city.
