Departments in Honduras

Honduras is divided into 18 administrative districts ( Departamentos ).

The largest department in terms of area is Olancho - in terms of population it is Francisco Morazán , where the capital of the country Tegucigalpa is also located. The smallest department in terms of both area and population is Islas de la Bahía .

The departments in Honduras are in turn divided into a total of 298 municipalities ( Municipalidades ). For statistical purposes, the municipalities are further subdivided into 3,731 aldeas , and these further into 30,591 caserios . At the lowest level, some caserios are further broken down into barrios or colonias .

Creation of the departments

  • 1825: Honduras is divided into seven departments: Comayagua, Santa Bárbara, Tegucigalpa, Choluteca, Yoro, Olancho, and Gracias.
  • 1869: Division of the seven existing departments and establishment of new ones: La Paz (from Comayagua), El Paraíso (from Tegucigalpa and Olancho), Copán (from Gracias), and La Mosquitia (from Yoro).
  • 1872: Creation of the Islas de la Bahía department (the archipelago was ceded to Honduras by Great Britain in 1860).
  • 1881: Parts of the Yoro and La Mosquitia departments become the Colón department.
  • 1883: Intibucá is created from parts of the La Paz and Gracias departments.
  • 1893: The departments of Valle (from Choluteca) and Cortés (from Santa Bárbara) are established.
  • 1902: Parts of the Yoro and Colón departments become the Atlántida department.
  • 1906: Parts of the Ocotepeque department become the Copán department.
  • 1957: Parts of the Department of Colón become the Department of Gracias a Dios.
