San José de Yuscarán is the capital of the Paraíso department in Honduras .

Geographical location

Yuscarán is located 65 km east of Tegucigalpa at the foot of Cerro Montserrat . It has around 200 buildings of colonial architecture and pine forests have grown in the area.

Reserva Biológica de Yuscarán

In 1979 the Reserva Biológica de Yuscarán was declared, it includes the Cerros El Volcán (1980 m) and Montserrat (1783 m). The core zone covers 1.5 square kilometers and is over 1800 m, the edge zone has 20.9 square kilometers.

Agricultural use is not hindered by the Reserva.

The Reserva is the drinking water catchment area of around 15 municipalities.

Prehistoric rock paintings have been found in the communities of Orealí and Oropolí.

In 1746 gold, silver and other precious metals were found. This led to the settlement of the area and exploitation by Spanish companies such as the Real de Minas de San José de Yuscarán in Ocotepeque , founded in 1744 .

The mines in Honduras are called Guayabillas , Malacate , Coloal , Gatal , El Plomo , Opoteca , Cuyal , San Martín , Caridad and El Corpus . They are located in Yuscarán and were found in 1771 by the farmer Juan Calvo. They were owned by the Argeñal family, part of which was bought in 1838 by Marcial Bennett, who exploited them with the support of the government of Honduras.

In 1869 Yuscarán became the capital of the Departamentos El Paraíso. The city's wealth led to Yuscarán having an electrical power supply in 1898.

In 1939 the El Buen Gusto Distileria was founded. Today it has around 120 employees. Yuscarán is known for the aguardiente , also called guaro, made from local sugar cane . The Mango and Mamey celebrations are also known throughout the country . Mango and mamey are two fruits that are grown in the region alongside melons and pumpkins .
