Trujillo is the place where Christopher Columbus set foot on the American mainland for the first time on August 14, 1502 during his fourth and final trip to the New World . Columbus gave this place, in the north of today's Honduras , the name Punta de Caxinas .
The current municipality of Trujillo is located in the department of Colón and is its capital. In 2016, 63,622 people lived in the community.
history
The history of the modern place begins in 1524, shortly after the conquests of Hernán Cortés in what is now Mexico. Cortés sent Cristóbal de Olid to this region to set up a Spanish outpost there, which de Olid gave the name Triunfo de la Cruz . In this place, located in the vicinity of today's Trujillo, de Olid tried to implement his own ideas until Cortés commissioned Francisco de Las Casas to crush de Olid, which he succeeded. Las Casas had the place moved to its current position, where there is a larger natural harbor, and gave it its current name after its Spanish birthplace .
Under Spanish control, Trujillo was Honduras' capital. In the 17th century Trujillo suffered a series of serious pirate incursions - during this time the city was destroyed several times. In 1821, with the independence of the Honduran state, Trujillo lost its status as the capital of the country to Comayagua . In 1860, Trujillo was the execution site of William Walker , who was president of neighboring Nicaragua from 1856 to 1857 and whose grave in Trujillo is now a tourist attraction.
Since 1987 the city has been the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Trujillo in Honduras . The Cathedral of San Juan Bautista is dedicated to John the Baptist .
