Cortés is one of the 18 departments in Honduras in Central America .
The capital of the department and by far the largest city in Cortés is San Pedro Sula .
Cortés is located on the Atlantic coast on the Gulf of Honduras and has an external border with Guatemala in the west . With a population of almost 1.4 million, Cortés is the most populous department in Honduras.
The department was founded in 1893 by splitting off from the departments of Santa Bárbara and Yoro .
