The Gulf or Bay of Honduras is a large bay in the Caribbean and is bounded by the coasts of Belize , Honduras and Guatemala . The western boundary is a 200-kilometer line between Dangriga in Belize and La Ceiba in Honduras.

Many rivers in Central America flow into the Gulf; including the Río Motagua and the Ulúa . The Lago de Izabal in Guatemala is connected to the gulf by the ravine of the Río Dulce .

In the Gulf of Honduras there are a large number of small islands ( cays ) and reefs which are collectively known as pelican cays . Many anglers visit the Gulf of Honduras to catch marlins , which are common there. Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye in particular are popular destinations for tourist trips.

Time and again, hurricanes form in the Gulf of Honduras, some of which have devastating effects - for example, Hurricane Hattie caused great damage in Belize in 1961.
