Caye Caulker or Cay Corker is a small coral island off the coast of Belize in Central America . The island is approximately 8 kilometers long and 2 kilometers wide and is located about 35 kilometers northeast of Belize City in the Caribbean Sea . The next island used for tourism but not permanently inhabited is Caye Chapel , the next larger permanently inhabited island is Ambergris Caye . Caye Caulker has around 1300 inhabitants, most of them Creole , Garifuna or Mestizo . Politically, the island belongs to the Belize District Province .

The formerly united island has been made up of two islands since 1961. Back then, Hurricane Hattie left a trench that is now called "The Split". In the northern part of the island there is a marine reserve , which is mostly overgrown with mangroves and coconut palms and offers nesting sites for numerous birds. The northern island has an area of 229 hectares , the southern 165 hectares. The total area of Caye Caulker is 394 hectares or just under four square kilometers.

South of Split is the main island with Caye Caulker Village. Caye Caulker used to be known regionally for its shipbuilding. Today tourism and fishing are the main sources of income for the residents.

The reef edge of the Belize Barrier Reef runs just east of Caye Caulker , which is why Caye Caulker is the ideal starting point for tours for divers and snorkelers.
