economy
Agriculture was particularly important in Choloma during the colonial period. However, this was repeatedly undone by numerous floods. In the middle of the 19th century, the first banana seeds came from banana plantations in Jamaica . This resulted in very large banana plantations, especially with the assistance of the New York Tropical Agricultural Company . A railway line was built to facilitate the export of bananas. This line connected Choloma with San Pedro Sula and Puerto Cortés . At the beginning of the 20th century , sugar cane cultivation began. In 1919 a sugar factory was built in La Lima , where all the sugar cane from Choloma was processed. In 1936 a large part of the banana harvest was lost to the Fusarium wilt attack. As a result, the New York Tropical Agricultural Company increasingly focused its activities on South America . The farmers therefore focused their activities on poultry farming and the cultivation of citrus fruits . In the 1950s, the export of wood became more important. Nowadays, large parts of the municipality have been designated as a tax-free area, which is why Choloma is now an important industrial city.
