Choluteca is one of the 18 departments in the Central American state of Honduras .
It is the southernmost region in Honduras on the Gulf of Fonseca and borders Nicaragua to the east and south . The capital of Choluteca is the city of the same name, Choluteca .
The department was founded in 1825 as one of the original administrative units after the independence of Honduras. Choluteca got its current form in 1893 with the separation of the western part of the department and the simultaneous establishment of the department of Valle .
