Olancho is one of 18 departments in Honduras in Central America .

It is also the largest department in the country and borders Nicaragua in the south . The capital of Olancho is Juticalpa .

The west and north of the region are mountainous - there are the mountain ranges of the Sierra de Agalta, Montaña de Tembladeros and Montaña de Botaderos. Central Olancho is characterized by cattle farming and agriculture. The east of the region is covered by tropical rainforest . Part of the Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site , is also located in this region.

The drug-related crime has risen sharply, especially in the department of Olancho in recent years. Small planes from South America use the vastness of the department to handle drugs.
