Gracias a Dios is one of the 18 departments in Honduras in Central America . His name comes from Spanish and means "thank God".

The capital of the department has been Puerto Lempira since 1975 - Brus Laguna previously had this function.

Gracias a Dios is located in the far east of Honduras on the Caribbean coast and is part of the Miskito coast . The area is extremely sparsely populated and has no long-distance roads to the rest of the country. In the south, Gracias a Dios has an external border with Nicaragua .
