Maynor Alexis Figueroa Róchez (born May 2, 1983 in Jutiapa ) is a Honduran football player .

Career

Maynor Figueroa began his career in his home country with the Honduran first division club CD Victoria , where he played in the Liga Nacional de Fútbol de Honduras . After he was able to establish himself there as a regular player, he moved to league rivals CD Olimpia . During his time at the club he was able to celebrate many successes and won the Apertura and Clausura several times . In addition, he reached the final of the Copa Interclubes UNCAF with CD Olimpia in 2005 and 2006 , both games were lost. In January 2008 he left the club and transferred on loan to the English first division side Wigan Athletic , who had signed his teammate Wilson Palacios just a few days earlier .

The defender made his debut for the Latics on April 5, 2008 in the Premier League . In the 2-0 win against Birmingham City , he ran in the 89th minute as a substitute for Josip Skoko on the field. About a month later, on May 11, 2008, he was in the starting lineup for the first time in the 2-0 home defeat to Manchester United and played the entire game. Shortly thereafter, the loan period expired and Figueroa initially returned to CD Olimpia in his home country. After he received his work permit in late July 2008 and the visa application was approved, he signed again on loan with Wigan Athletic. The agreement also contained a permanent obligation clause. The defender made it into the club's starting line-up in a short time and thus recommended himself for a permanent commitment.

On December 23, 2008 it was announced that he had signed a contract with Wigan for the next three and a half years. His first goal in the English top division he scored on January 11, 2009 in the home game against Tottenham Hotspur , when he scored the winning goal for the Latics in the 90th minute . On December 12, 2009 he scored a remarkable goal in the away game against Stoke City . National team

Figueroa has been a member of the Honduran national football team since 2003 . With the selection he took part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2005 and 2007 . On May 8, 2014, he was appointed to the squad of the Honduran national football team for the 2014 World Cup by coach Luis Fernando Suárez .
