Josip Skoko (born December 10, 1975 in Mount Gambier , South Australia ) is a former Australian football player and current coach of Croatian descent .

Career

Club career

North Geelong Warriors, Hajduk Split and KRC Genk

The midfielder began playing football in the state of Victoria in Geelong with the North Geelong Warriors . The Australian of Croatian origin , who also has Croatian citizenship , went to Croatia to join the Hajduk Split football club in 1995 . At the end of 1999 he followed an offer from Racing Genk's Belgian first division . With him as captain, Genk won the Belgian football championship in 2002.

Ankara, Wigan Athletic, return to Split and end of career

In 2003 he moved to the Turkish Süper Lig to Gençlerbirligi Ankara . After two years he moved to the English club Wigan Athletic , where he was loaned to the second division club Stoke City in January 2006 until the end of the current season .

He returned to Hajduk Split in the summer of 2008 before moving to Melbourne Heart in 2010 . A year later in March 2011, he returned to his youth club North Geelong SC , where he ended his career in December 2011.

National team career

Skoko took part in 1995 with the Australian U-20 selection at the Junior World Championship in Qatar, where the team lost in the quarter-finals to Portugal with 1: 2 after extra time. In 1997, the midfielder made his debut against Macedonia in the senior national team of Australia and shortly afterwards took part in the 1997 Confederations Cup , further appearances in this tournament followed in 2001 and 2005 . In 2000 he took the Olympic team at the Olympic football tournament in part in their own country, but the team failed devoid of points already in the group stage.

He was part of the Australian World Cup squad at the 2006 World Cup , but was not used during the tournament. On August 31, 2007, he resigned from the national team. Josip Skoko had his farewell game on September 11, 2007 in the friendly against Argentina in Melbourne .

Career as a coach

After retiring in March 2011, he became player-coach for North Geelong SC. After nine months, he was fired from Geelong's coaching position and returned to Melbourne Heart as a youth coach . Skoko held the job until June 2013 as a youth coach at Hearts and then coached the U-12 team, his former youth team North Geelong Soccer Club. Former national team colleagues Steve Horvat , Matthew Spiranovic and the former Croatian national goalkeeper Joey Didulica also work in the youth academy .
