The Hirsch Effekt is a band from Hanover founded in 2008 . Their music is often referred to as artcore because of its mix of styles .

history

The musicians Nils Wittrock and Ilja Lappin met at the Hanover University of Music, Theater and Media and founded the band with Philipp Wende in 2008. The band name refers to the permeability of the mucous membranes of the small intestine discovered by the German-Jewish doctor Rahel Hirsch , which was named after her as the Hirsch effect .

In 2009 The Hirsch Effekt produced and released a self-titled demo recording with five songs. The band sent them to fanzines , blogs, indie labels and promoters in Germany together with handwritten letters. Not least because of her collaboration with the Chamber Choir Hannover and her orchestral references that broke with the conventions of Emocore and Mathcore .

Holon: Hiberno ” was released on March 19, 2010 on Midsummer Records, the debut album produced with Jens Siefert and the first part of the “Holon” trilogy . After an appearance in the opening act of the emopunk band Adolar , I got in touch with the operator of the label Kapitän Platte, through which the vinyl edition of "Holon: Hiberno" was released in early February 2011.

In cooperation with Ampire Records from Frankfurt the split EP Perigæum / Apogæum was released with the hardcore band Caleya . Kapitän Platte brought out a split single with the band Adolar, on which the bands cover each other. The contact to the production team Tim Tautorat and Max Trieder (including Turbostaat , David Hasselhoff , In Flames ), with whom the second album “ Holon: Anamnesis ” was recorded, was also established through Adolar . It was released in 2012 by Kapitän Platte and Midsummer Records.

This was followed by an appearance in the opening act of The Dillinger Escape Plan as part of the concert series “Visions in Concert”. The American band then took The Hirsch Effekt on their tour the following year. In addition, the trio played numerous concerts of their own and brought out another split together with the band Zinnschauer . On the LP, the band released orchestral arrangements of two album songs as well as previously unreleased pieces. The band recorded the piece Fixum with their new drummer Moritz Schmidt after founding member Philipp Wende left the band in 2013. The band toured seamlessly with Schmidt and recorded the third part of the Holon trilogy. Holon: Agnosie was released on Long Branch Records in 2015 .

The Hirsch Effekt performed at the Wacken Open Air at the beginning of August 2017 . In the middle of the same month, the fourth album Eskapist was released , which brought the band a cover story with FUZE Magazine . The album entered the German album charts at number 21.

Style and reception

The lyrics of the early songs are often only a few lines long and mostly limited to personal and emotional problems. After completing the Holon trilogy, the album Eskapist fell out politically, since the end of 2015 Wittrock had increasingly dealt with socially critical issues, fascism , right-wing populism and terrorism . The decisive factor for this was a key experience of Wittrock at the end of 2015 after a false alarm on suspicion of terrorism in Hanover.

At the beginning of the Holon trilogy, The Hirsch Effekt referred to themselves as an “indielectro post punk metal DIY band”. In their music, however, the band uses influences from many more musical styles. unterm-average founder Andreas Wildner described the musical breadth in the promotional letter for "Holon: Agnosie":

“Genres such as hardcore, chamber music, death metal, jazz, electronica and German pop are deconstructed and absorbed into one's own artistic work. The Hanoverian Trio is the musical resonance space of the black hole. "

- Andreas Wildner

A clear stylistic classification of the band is difficult due to their extensive genre mix, the term Artcore is often used . Comparisons with metal bands like Coheed and Cambria and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum as well as The Mars Volta are not uncommon. The album Eskapist , which was released in 2017, also features similar style-free music, but “the stylistic center is more clearly defined” with metal , according to plattentests.de author Christopher Padraig ó Murchadha.

The releases of The Hirsch Effekt sometimes met with enthusiastic criticism, for example the debut EP and the following album on Ox-Fanzine , Babyblauen Seiten and eclipsed . The magazine Visions spoke of the debut as an “album of the moment”, it was a “frighteningly great game without limits” by a “monstrous band”. Holon: Anamnesis was voted in 2013 by Visions readers as the only German-language album among the “20 best albums of all time”. With their Holon trilogy, The Hirsch Effekt “pushed the boundaries of what is possible in Metal by a huge amount. The relationship between noise and art will never be the same again. "
