The Dillinger Escape Plan was a band from New Jersey named after the first " public enemy No. 1" of the USA , John Dillinger .

Band history

Emerging from the hardcore band Arcane, The Dillinger Escape Plan was founded to correct the musical shortcomings of the previous band. The first self-titled EP was released in 1997, when it was founded . Soon after, she was signed to Relapse Records , where two EPs and two albums were produced by 2004. In between, other publications appeared, including the EP Irony Is a Dead Scene from 2002, on which Mike Patton replaced Dimitri Minakakis, who had since left, as well as two split EPs , one each with Nora and Drowningman . Furthermore, The Dillinger Escape Plan was part of the Peel Sessions in 2002 and played an early version of Van Damsel , published years later, in addition to a cover of Billy Idol's Rebel Yell .

In Europe, The Dillinger Escape Plan played in the opening act for a tour of System of a Down ; a concert critic wrote of "sheer horror" that reigned in the audience, an author for the magazine Visions put it this way: "Wow, they are exhausting", noises from all corners of the world without enthusiasm, while the Krachcore opening act on stage is madness and the end of the world conjures. Liam Wilson admitted in an interview: "I think if you don't know us and go to one of our concerts, it can be a relatively shocking experience." The magazine Kerrang! Nevertheless, the band called "The Best Live Band on the Planet" (German: The best live band in the world ).

2004 saw the release of Miss Machine, the first album on which the new permanent singer Greg Puciato could be heard. The album sold more than 12,000 units in the first week in the US alone, making it the band's best-selling release to date. This could be explained, among other things, by the fact that the band increasingly included melodic aspects in their music. Visions led the album to number 46 of the best albums in 2004 in their annual review. The Dillinger Escape Plan was followed by a two-year tour with bands such as Slipknot or Megadeth , which was overshadowed by various incidents. For health reasons, Benoit had to be replaced again and again from 2004 to 2006, and in 2005 Weinman was injured in a car accident.

In June 2006, an EP entitled Plagiarism was released exclusively via the iTunes online shop . As the name suggests, these were mainly not new pieces by the band, but various cover songs by artists from various musical fields; including Justin Timberlake , Nine Inch Nails , Massive Attack and Soundgarden . In late 2006, The Dillinger Escape Plan contributed a piece to a Melvins - Tribute Album in. It should be the last piece recorded together with their longtime drummer Chris Pennie, who is now with Coheed and Cambria .

In November 2007, the band's third album, Ire Works, was released. Steve Evetts was executive producer. Gil Sharone from the Stolen Babies took over the role of drummer at least for the duration of the recordings and the European tour in early 2008, Jeff Tuttle (ex- Heads Will Roll ) replaced Benoit.

At the end of May 2009, The Dillinger Escape Plan separated from Relapse Records after almost 10 years and was now under contract with Season of Mist Records , where they also had their own sub-label Party Smasher Inc. In March 2010 their new studio album Option Paralysis followed , on which they collaborated with pianist Mike Garson, among others, which Puciato also calls their heaviest album to date. As part of the album tour, they also came to Europe from the beginning of October to mid-November, where bands such as The Ocean or the Cancer Bats played as supporting acts.

In May 2013 the fifth studio album One of Us is the Killer was released on Sumerian Records / Party Smasher Inc. In his review for the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Jörg Scheller wrote that the album “did not quite achieve the quality of earlier DEP milestones like Miss Machine ”. Nevertheless, The Dillinger Escape Plan remains "one of the most important and inspiring bands in recent pop history, insofar as they give the never-ending 'discomfort in culture' (Sigmund Freud) a contemporary form."

Shortly before the release of their sixth studio album Dissociation in October 2016, the band announced their upcoming breakup after an international tour by spring 2017.

style

The group's musical style is often referred to as mathcore or chaoscore . Similar to Converge , The Dillinger Escape Plan try to sound out the extremes of music. They combine elements of Grindcore with complex arrangements and jazz-like melodic parts.

An essential feature is the constant change of meter , the schematic sequence of which the term Mathcore aims at.

Pop culture references

The group Anal Cunt released a song in 2001 called Anyone Who Likes The Dillinger Escape Plan Is a Fagot , in which they pointed out that they do not particularly like The Dillinger Escape Plan ("you guys fucking suck"). In this song, Anal Cunt give the sexual behavior of the critics as the reason for the predominantly positive reviews for The Dillinger Escape Plan ("you never get bad reviews because all the writers shoot up cum"). In reality, however, the two bands are said to have enjoyed a long friendship.
