Relapse Records is a record company from the USA that mainly has extreme metal bands under contract. Best-known representatives are Nile , Suffocation and Dying Fetus . Relapse Records is based in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania.

History of origin

Relapse Records was started by Matt Jacobson in August 1990 at his parents' home in Aurora , Colorado . The first releases were 7 " EPs by Incantation and Deceased , among others ; the first CD release was Suffocation's Human Waste album. Besides Suffocation, Deceased and Incantation are among the first successes of the young label.

William Yurkiewicz Jr. released the bands General Surgery , Disrupt and his own band Exit-13 at this time . After he met Jacobson, he became his partner and brought these bands to Relapse Records.

In 1992 the Release Entertainment sub-label was founded, which focused more on the industrial and ambient areas. Suffocation's debut album Human Waste and the first two Amorphis albums The Karelian Isthmus and Tales from the Thousand Lakes made the label known worldwide. In 1995 Neurosis was signed, which was taken over directly by Alternative Tentacles . Relapse now also opened up to the post-hardcore market. With Brutal Truth they were also able to sign a Grindcore legend.

In 1995 the homepage Relapse.com was started. In 1996, the online shop Resound was affiliated with this and delivered worldwide. In 1996 Relapse established a sales deal with Germany and opened an office in Berlin.

In 1998 Dillinger Escape Plan and Nile were added. Both should establish themselves as new priority carriers alongside the main bands. In 2000 Relapse moved to Philadelphia. In 2001, for the 10th anniversary, the first official Relapse store opened in Philadelphia. With Mastodon , Alabama Thunderpussy and High on Fire , new bands were again produced.

In 2003 the label hosted its first music festival, the Relapse Contamination Festival, which was attended by 2,500 people. A DVD with recordings from the festival was later released.

In 2005 the label landed with six bands on the list of 25 Most Important Bands in Metal by the American Alternative Press magazine. The first punk band was signed with Zeke . Dillinger Escape Plan and Mastodon cracked the Billboard charts in the same year .
