The underground label Alternative Tentacles Records was founded in June 1979 and is one of the oldest still active record companies of its kind to this day. It was originally founded to give the political punk band Dead Kennedys an opportunity to release their music, since the band was from established record labels was not signed. Although it is also considered a punk label, Alternative Tentacles is best known for its influence on underground culture. The owner and founder of the label is Jello Biafra , who is also responsible for selecting the speakers and musicians published.

In the early years of its existence, the label gained attention by marketing bands like 7 Seconds , Butthole Surfers , Dead Kennedys, DOA , False Prophets , Half Japanese , Neurosis and No Means No . One of the label's survival strategies is to offer very different music. There also is spoken-word albums are by Noam Chomsky , Jello Biafra and others on the label. It also releases Brazilian hardcore , bent pop , faux country and rock 'n' roll .

A Jello Biafra project on Alternative Tentacles was the No WTO Combo , which addressed anti- globalization opponents and WTO opponents with their live album Live from the Battle of Seattle . The combo appeared on December 1, 1999 during the demonstrations against the WTO Ministerial Conference in Seattle ; it consisted of Jello Biafra (vocals), Krist Novoselic (ex-bassist from Nirvana ; bass, vocals), Kim Thayil (ex-guitarist from Soundgarden ; guitar) and Gina Mainwal (drums).

Alternative Tentacles Records employs four people in Emeryville , California. Originally founded in San Francisco , the label moved there in October 2002. In addition to the label activity, it also sells t-shirts, books and other merchandise items.

A credit to Jello Biafra and Alternative Tentacles is also the promotion and development of the "Denver Sound" in the alternative country music genre .
