Soundgarden was an American grunge - band from Seattle . The name goes back to the sound sculpture The Sound Garden , which stands on the grounds of the national ocean and weather authority in the hometown of the band.

Band history

First phase (1984–1997)

In 1984 Chris Cornell , who initially played drums, and Hiro Yamamoto formed a band within the Seattle punk and independent scene that later became Soundgarden. Soon Kim Thayil got on as guitarist and Scott Sundquist as drummer, after which Chris Cornell switched to vocals.

Sundquist left the band in 1986 and was replaced by Matt Cameron , who previously drummed at Skin Yard . After a few demo tapes and releases on local compilations , Soundgarden signed to the commercially independent label Sub Pop , which also released their debut single Nothing to Say and two EPs . Then they switched to SST Records , where the four recorded their first full album Ultramega OK in 1988 . In between they toured regularly in the United States .

Soon the commercial music industry took notice, and in 1989 they released their first major album Louder Than Love . Soon after, bassist Yamamoto dropped out to finish his studies . His successor Jason Everman came from Nirvana and was replaced by Ben Shepherd after a few appearances .

In between, Cornell and the later Pearl Jam members dedicated the album Temple of the Dog to the late singer Andrew Wood .

With the new line-up, they recorded their hardest record Badmotorfinger , whose release Jesus Christ Pose attracted attention across national borders because of the rhythmic attacks and because of the text. During this time they also played at the Lollapalooza festivals. In 1993, the Soundgarden side projects Hater and Wellwater Conspiracy were founded, in addition to Matt Cameron and Ben Shepherd, a number of guest musicians were involved.

The album Superunknown was produced by Michael Beinhorn , who was very involved in the production. As a result, the live implementation of the pieces turned out to be difficult because the album had been over-produced. This has been cited as one of the reasons for the band's many canceled performances. The irony of the story is that the band had a great success with the album Superunknown , which translates as super unknown . The song Black Hole Sun turned out to be the most successful hit . For the music video for Black Hole Sun , Soundgarden won an MTV Video Music Award for Best Metal / Hard Rock Video in 1994 , followed by the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for Spoonman in 1995 .

After the bad experiences Soundgarden had made despite the success with the recordings of Superunknown , the members decided to record the following album Down on the Upside themselves. After the release in 1996, Chris Cornell had problems with his voice, which is why performances were repeatedly canceled. This led to suspicions about a possible separation of the band.

In April 1997, Soundgarden was finally disbanded. Commenting on the breakup, the band announced the following: “ After twelve years the members of Soundgarden have amicably and mutually decided to disband to pursue other interests. There is no word at this time on any of the members' future plans. "(German:" After twelve years, the members of Soundgarden decided in friendship and mutual agreement to split up in order to devote themselves to other interests. At the moment there is nothing more to say about the future plans of the individual members. ")

Members' own paths (1997-2010)

After a brief stint on The Smashing Pumpkins , Matt Cameron has been with Pearl Jam since 1998. He has played on all albums that have been released since the 2000 album Binaural . He served his first studio contribution to the originally intended as a Christmas fan club single cover version of Last Kiss by Wayne Cochran , who later officially as a benefit single for Kosovo - crisis appeared and still represents the largest single success of the band.

Chris Cornell founded the band Audioslave with the three remaining Rage Against the Machine members Tom Morello , Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk in 2001 , with which he sang until early 2007. After the band failed to tour their 2006 album Revelations , rumors of separation arose. These were reinforced when a reunion of Rage Against the Machine took place in January 2007. In February, Cornell finally verified the rumors and announced his exit. The reasons for this he named the lack of chemistry between him and the other band members and his plans for a solo career. To date (as of 2015) Cornell has released 5 solo albums. He also became known through the song You Know My Name , which was the theme song for the 21st official James Bond film Casino Royale .

Kim Thayil worked on Probot , a side project of the former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl , among others .

Hiro Yamamoto played with the independent band Truly in the 1990s .

The band reunited in 2010

On January 1, 2010, Chris Cornell announced the reunion of the band on his MySpace account. The first gig since 1997 took place on April 16, 2010 under the code name Nudedragons (an anagram for Soundgarden) in the club Showbox at the Market in Seattle. In August 2010, Soundgarden headlined the Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago .

On September 17, 2010, Black Rain, the first single from the new best-of compilation Telephantasm , which was released on September 24, 2010 in Germany, was released.

In mid-January 2012, the band announced that a new album would be released in spring 2012. It will be "stylistically linked to our last album from 1996". The band performed for the first time since the reunion in 2012 at various festivals in Europe. In addition, the single Live to Rise , which was composed especially for the soundtrack of the film Marvel's The Avengers , followed in April 2012, the first completely new single since the reunification.

The sixth studio album, King Animal , was finally released on November 9, 2012.

In 2014 Soundgarden u. a. seen in Germany as the opening act for Black Sabbath . However, Matt Cameron was not there due to his sideline at Pearl Jam at these concerts. However, Cameron said he would definitely remain a member of the band. Matt Chamberlain (known for his collaborations with Pearl Jam , Eric Clapton , Robbie Williams and David Bowie ) played drums for Matt Cameron . In fact, Cameron made repeated appearances with Soundgarden after his engagements at Pearl Jam allowed.

Singer Chris Cornell committed suicide on May 17, 2017 at the age of 52 after the band performed in Detroit .

Since then, the band's future has been uncertain.
