Matthew "Matt" Cameron (born November 28, 1962 in San Diego , California ) is an American musician. He became known as the drummer for the rock band Soundgarden . He has been a drummer with Pearl Jam since 1998 .

At the age of 13 he played with friends in a cover rock band called "KISS". In 1978 he had an appearance in the comedy Attack of the Killer Tomatoes , where he sang the song "Puberty Love". He moved to Seattle in the early 1980s . There he became a member of the rock band Skin Yard . In 1986 he switched to Soundgarden, whose drummer he remained until the band split up in 1997. Since Soundgarden reunited in 2010, Cameron played for two bands until 2017, when he did not leave Pearl Jam.

He then appeared at the Smashing Pumpkins . He also had guest appearances, including with his former bandmate Chris Cornell . Occasionally he also plays jazz music , among others with the Tone Dogs and together with John McBain Progressive Rock in the joint side project Wellwater Conspiracy . Cameron was also one of the first live cast of Queens of the Stone Age .

In 2016, Rolling Stone listed Cameron as 52nd of the 100 best drummers of all time .
