occupation

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is an American feature film produced in 1978 , which is designed as a parody of the science fiction and horror film genre.

The premiere took place in the USA on October 8, 1978, the premiere in Germany was on June 2, 1983.

action

In a US research laboratory, normal tomatoes develop into intelligent monsters that attack and eat people. They soon have almost the entire country under their control. While the FIA (similar to the CIA ) is busy putting a stop to the killer vegetables, the PR firm Opinion Makers tries to convince the public of the harmlessness of tomatoes on behalf of presidential press spokesman Jim Richardson. The president, who sees his re-election in danger, puts together a team of specialists under Mason Dixon and finally launches a massive military strike against the tomato plague.

Dixon finds out that Richardson is behind the tomato invasion. He strives for power, later wants to present himself as the savior of the nation and recall the tomatoes. Before Richardson reveals to Dixon how he controls the killer tomatoes and can kill him, his team member Wilbur Finletter rescues him and kills Richardson. Dixon sees the record Puberty Love in the Richardson record collection , the shrill song which, as he had previously discovered on the radio, has a deterrent effect on the killer tomatoes. Dixon has Finletter gather the city's survivors in the stadium and play the song over the loudspeakers, whereupon the now huge tomatoes retreat, shrink back to normal and are trampled on by the residents.

At the end of the film you can see how after the tomatoes the carrots rise from the bed.

background

When it came out, the film was known as a trash film and was considered one of the worst films of all time (although it was intended as a parody of actual trash films and its badness is supposed to ironically caricature them), but at the same time quickly achieved cult status .

The film had three sequels: The return of the killer tomatoes with George Clooney in one of his first roles (1988), The killer tomatoes strike back (1990) and Killer Tomatoes eat France (1991), which never appeared in German.

In addition, the animated series Killer Tomatoes (1990-1993, 21 episodes) and two computer games (1986, 1991) emerged from the film.

useful information

  • A helicopter crash can be seen at the beginning of the film. In fact, it is an accident; since no one was seriously injured, it was decided to make the most of the costly incident and added the crash to the plot after the fact. The actors also stayed in character and improvised appropriate dialogues.
  • The elevation of the “killer carrots” at the end of the film was discarded in subsequent films in favor of a killer tomato row.
  • In the German Navy and US Navy , floating, red exercise targets are called " Killer Tomatoes " or " Killer Tomatoes ".
