It is the sequel to the film Attack of the Killer Tomatoes . There was another sequel in 1990 with the film The Killer Tomatoes Strike Back . The leading roles are cast with Anthony Starke , George Clooney , Karen Mistal , Steve Lundquist and John Astin .

action

Everything has been quiet in the United States since the "attack by the killer tomatoes" ten years ago . But some survivors are still so traumatized by the terrible events that they cannot even bear the sight of normal tomatoes. Wilbur Finletter, the somewhat weird militarist with saber and parachute, has meanwhile opened a restaurant whose specialty is "non-tomato sauce pizza", i.e. tomato-free pizza.

The tomato danger has not yet been finally overcome, as the sly professor Mortimer Gangreen forges sinister plans in which Tara, the great love of Wilbur's nephew Chad, plays an important role. Chad is lucky to have found a place in the pizzeria, but the nightmare catches up with him when he learns that the woman he loves is actually a mutated killer tomato and Gangreen wants to use her to rule the world to get. The professor succeeded in carrying out strictly forbidden experiments with tomatoes and mutating them into humans. And Tara, of all people, was the mad professor's assistant. However, she fled with her brother, a lint tomato, and ended up with Chad. She says that the professor developed a tomato conversion chamber connected to a jukebox. Using the right song, he could use music from Michael Jackson , for example, create a clone of the singer, use music from Miami Vice , create a clone of Don Johnson and play seductive music, bring out beautiful women. His preferred music, however, is rock music, because it creates soldiers.

Gangreen's servant Igor manages to get Tara back into his or the professor's control, whereby Chad and his friend Matt are also captured. Now it is up to Chad's uncle Wilbur to take action again, as in the past. He recruits the veterans of the former tomato war as well as his army from killer tomatoes turned into Rambo warriors. Meanwhile, Gangreen and his cloned soldiers oppose attacking the nearby prison in order to free his ally, Jim Richardson, who is incarcerated there. His plan is to build this president of the United States with the help of his killer tomatoes. But this time, too, he ultimately does not achieve his goal.

production

Production notes

The film presented by New World Pictures is a Four Square Production production. Filming took place from June 22, 1987 in National City , San Diego , Chula Vista and Seaport Village, California ; further recordings were made on the Seacoast Natural Foods in San Diego and in the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego.

The plot of the film is interrupted every now and then with scenes, such as actors haggling over their salaries, the information that the production has no more money to be shot, whereupon the suggestion follows that product advertising in the Incorporate film, as this is now common practice in the media. Then, as the story progresses, contributors are actually promoting products.

background

George Clooney , who played one of his first movie roles here, later said of the film that the thought of it made him sick and that if the film was on TV he would turn off immediately. He satirically commented on the "tomato dilemma", after all he could claim to have acted in the worst film of all time. The film is so bottomless that you just yawn from start to finish.

The guest star is the world-class swimmer and Olympic champion Steve Lundquist in the role of the servant of Professor Mortimer Gangreens.

Differences Between Film and TV Series

In the cartoon series Attack the Killer Tomatoes, the tomatoes have eyes and a mouth. In the movies, however, they only got both from The Killer Tomatoes Strike Back . Gangreen is a professor in the film and a doctorate in the series; Chad is a teenager in the show while he's a young man in the film. In the film, Tara turns into a tomato when she listens to certain music. In the series, this happens when it is sprinkled with salt. If you sprinkle them with pepper, the process is reversed.

More plans

In the end credits of the film you can read that a third part called The Killer Tomatoes go to France should follow and the series is intended as a trilogy. But it followed in 1990 The Killer Tomatoes Strike Back (Killer Tomatoes Strike Back) and 1991 The Killer Tomatoes eat France , which should actually be the third part.

criticism

The Lexicon of International Film stated:

"A hair-raising sequel to a cult film that wants to surpass the undemanding, cheerful nonsense of the first part"

Nightmare Horrormovies was of the opinion that John De Bello had again succeeded in creating “an extremely bizarre scenario that offers 90 minutes of entertaining and funny entertainment” that one should “really enjoy”. The return of the killer tomatoes is one of the “absolute classics of the trash film”, one has to “simply see the film”.

In Kino.de one was that the film comedy that it had brought in festivals and cinemas to cult status, "go down well with friends shrill conversation" might think.

B Movies Heroes spoke of a demented horror film parody immersed in the atmosphere of the 80s. It is an unpretentious little film that you can watch from time to time.

Blood Brothers Reviews recommended that you only watch the film if you were willing not to roll your eyes and just wanted to have fun, because this is not a film that shrinks from being terrible in the best possible way, this but do with a sense of confidence that carries much of the film. The chemistry between the cast is just right, which also contributes to the fact that Return of the Killer Tomatoes is one of the best absurd comedies ever.

Bloody Disgusting said the film had so many great jokes and little tidbits that it was impossible to capture them all at first glance. The acting performances are also first class. Astin is perfect as Professor Gangreen. The real stars, however, are Starke and Clooney. The chemistry between them is just right, which is why they work well together. The return of the killer tomatoes is certainly not for everyone, but if you like films like this, you will love it. He is well made, very clever and makes you laugh from start to finish.

DVD Beaver wrote that the film was armed with a healthy sense of its own ridiculousness and was well aware of its status, which the first film in a row had already drawn.

Horror Cult Films spoke of a stupid science fiction comedy about pizza delivery boy Chad Finletter and his best friend Matt Stevens, which was cheap and cheesy, but also extremely happy. The low budget gives the film a certain likeable quality that both drives the film and lets the viewer stick to the screen. Confident and not afraid to show it, the characters and even the filmmakers made fun of what they conjured up on the big screen, even to the point where they ran out of money and had to resort to product placements . If you are looking for a film that is really fun, it is always worth the money.
