Backspacer is the ninth studio album by the US band Pearl Jam . It was released in September 2009 on the band's own label Monkeywrench Records, distributed by Universal Music Group and licensed with Island Records . With a running time of just under 37 minutes, it is the shortest studio album in the band's history.

Emergence

Backspacer is the first album since Yield 1998 that was produced with Brendan O'Brien , who, according to singer Eddie Vedder, was also allowed to intervene more in the compositions: “At this point, I think we're willing to let somebody cut the songs up a little bit. " ("We are now willing to have someone cut the pieces a bit.") He continued: "In the past, Brendan would say, 'It's a great song, but I think you should do it in a different key', and we'd say no. But now that we've heard Bruce [Springsteen] has listened to his suggestions, I think we will too. " ("Before, Brendan would have said, 'This is a great song, but I think you should play it in a different key,' and we would have said no. But now, having heard that Bruce Springsteen followed his suggestion, I think we will too. ”) Bassist Jeff Ament said O'Brien had a“ brutally honest ”approach to showing what works and what doesn't. That advanced the work.

reception

Backspacer was also the first album to top the Billboard 200 since No Code in 1996 . It reached number three in Germany and ninth place in Great Britain . At the Grammy Awards 2011 the album was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album , but could not win it. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic wrote that Pearl Jam really went back to basics with Backspacer . He described it as a “party album” by Pearl Jam standards - “a party that would consist of nothing but philosophical debates until the wee hours of the morning, but a party anyway.” He awarded four and a half stars out of five. Michael Rensen from Rock Hard sums it up: "Eddie Vedder & Co. have long since ceased to blow such great songs out of their hearts and minds, and in this form one beats the majority of the pseudo-alterna rock superstars of the last decade by far." He awarded eight out of ten points. Michael Schuh from Laut.de commented: “In the last few years you often had the feeling that the band was cramping in their attempts to live up to all expectations, now even classic rock pieces like Speed of Sound and Amongst the Waves tower like lighthouses whose signals are actually from the track list to the ten light -Vergangenheit. "There were awarded four out of five stars.
