Louder Than Love is the second studio album by the US band Soundgarden . It was released in September 1989 by A&M Records .

style

In the days of Louder Than Love , when the grunge term did not yet exist, Soundgarden were often compared to Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin , i.e. a mixture of heavy metal and hard rock , terms such as heavy rock or street metal were compared to the grunge Associated with precursors. The band said about themselves that they were “enough for anyone into speed metal , but we're heavy rock ... Neo-metal maybe.” Other influences were British bands like Killing Joke or Bauhaus . The band already used unorthodox clock schemes on the album. Thus Get on the Snake played in a 9/4 time, I Awake has 4/4, 6/4, 9/8, 11 / 8- and 14/8 clocks on.

History of origin

After the debut Ultramega OK was released on the smaller label SST Records, it had turned off some interested larger labels. A&M Records, on the other hand, thought it was a good idea to release the debut in this way and then signed the band. The album was recorded in Seattle from December 1988 to January 1989 .

reception

Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune wrote that the record was one of the most innovative hard rock records since Master of Puppets : “Even Soundgarden's hardest, loudest workouts have a subtle, sensual underpinning, an unlikely mix that makes Louder Than Love one of the most innovative hard-rock records to come skateboarding down the pike since Metallica's Master of Puppets (Elektra) in 1986. “Steve Huey from Allmusic awarded three stars out of five. He called the album a step towards mainstream metal. "It's worthwhile to sift through Louder Than Love , but don't expect consistency."
