King Animal is the sixth and final studio album by the grunge band Soundgarden . It was released on Seven Four Entertainment / Republic Records in November 2012 . It is the band's first regular studio album since Down on the Upside in 1996.
Origin and style
In 2010 Soundgarden reunited and initially released the compilation Telephantasm and the live album Live on I-5 . King Animal is their first studio album after the reunion. Like their last output Down on the Upside , it was produced by Adam Kasper and recorded in the last lineup of the band from February 2011 to August 2012.
reception
The Musikexpress wrote: "With their familiar, heavy metal-influenced alternative rock, Soundgarden sound as if they had never been away and sometimes even as if they still had big goals." The site awarded 3.5 stars out of 5.
According to Josef Gasteiger from the internet magazine Laut.de, "the quartet manages its trademarks without hesitation as a band that is aware of its past but does not allow itself to be depressed by it." Above all, he emphasized that King Animal is "a record that grows with every listen. [...] After a few runs, the sprawling arrangements come together, the melodies open in your ears and you wonder why the hell you are doing this cool bass line or that bridge only noticed the fifth time for the first time. " He awarded 4 out of 5 points for the album.
Jan Freitag stated for Zeit Online that King Animal "[may] break something down towards the end, as if the late forties had had to struggle a little to achieve full album strength." However, he emphasized that "there has seldom been a reunification that sounded so little like lack of money and withdrawal symptoms after long-ago successes with 21 million records" and attested that the album sounded "refreshingly like a new beginning without self-corrections, without pressure to modernize and false profile neuroses . "
The show Kulturzeit on 3sat also welcomed the return of the grunge veterans, albeit not uncritically: "Unfortunately, the current single" Been Away For Too Long "has turned out to be very banal musically and lyrically.
