Queens of the Stone Age is a band from Palm Desert , California , founded by Josh Homme in 1996 , which can be roughly assigned to the alternative rock or stoner rock scene. Josh Homme is the only permanent member of the band.
history
Beginnings and Queens of the Stone Age (1996-1999)
After Josh Homme disbanded the former band Kyuss in 1995 after internal disputes, he played as a substitute musician in a few bands he was friends with ( Screaming Trees , Earthlings? And Soundgarden ), but soon realized that he could only be happy again with a new band of his own. Therefore he founded the band Gamma Ray in 1996 with Screaming Trees member Van Conner and session drummer Victor Indrizzo . But since there was already a band with this name in Germany, they renamed themselves Queens of the Stone Age . The name came from Chris Goss (Masters of Reality, friend and producer of the band), who said "god, you sound like the queens of the stone age". The band members liked it so much that they stuck to the name. Nick Oliveri, who, like Homme , had played with Kyuss , acted as bass player .
The first songs they played together were remnants of the last Kyuss sessions. When trying to differentiate themselves musically from Kyuss, the musicians increasingly relied on tough rock, more complicated guitar riffs and minimalistic drumming. Josh Homme later referred to the style as "robot rock" due to the simple drums, Nick Oliveri as "cocaine pop" due to the partly psychedelic riffs .
In 1998 the self-titled debut album, limited to 3000 copies, was released, on which Homme recorded guitar and bass alone, as Oliveri was busy with his side project Mondo Generator . The album was enthusiastically received by the press and fans, which enabled the Queens of the Stone Age to tour the world for two years .
Rated R and Songs for the Deaf (2000-2004)
In 2000 the second album Rated R was released with the extremely successful single Feel Good Hit of the Summer (in cooperation with Rob Halford from Judas Priest ), the text of which consists exclusively of a list of drugs .
In 2001 the band began to record their next album, Songs for the Deaf , reinforced by Mark Lanegan on the microphone, which was released in 2002, now with Dave Grohl ( Foo Fighters and formerly Nirvana ) on drums. The meanwhile third album and the first single No One Knows were enthusiastically received worldwide by both the fans and the music press. Grohl left the band immediately after the end of the recordings and the shooting for the first video.
On February 11 and 12, 2004 it was announced that Nick Oliveri "after several incidents in the last 18 months, after which no cooperation between the two main members was possible" (management of the band) has separated from the Queens of the Stone Age . Some time later, Homme announced in an interview that he had thrown Oliveri out of the band because he had heard rumors that the bassist had regularly been violent with his (Oliveri's) wife, which Oliveri had not been able to refute.
Lullabies to Paralyze and Era Vulgaris (2005-2010)
Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri were reconciled in March 2005, but continued to go their separate ways musically. Even Mark Lanegan had in the meantime left the band to increasingly have to worry again about his solo career, however, was on the album Lullabies to Paralyze to hear, which hit the shelves in March 2005, nor on some titles. Also on the album Era Vulgaris , released on June 8, 2007, the band continued the tradition of many guest appearances and worked with Mark Lanegan, Trent Reznor of the Nine Inch Nails and Julian Casablancas of The Strokes .
The album Rated R , released in 2000, was re-released on August 6, 2010 as a double CD. In addition to the regular album, the re-release also includes a second CD with B-sides and live recordings.
On March 7, 2011, the self-titled album was re-released as a remastered version including three bonus tracks.
... Like Clockwork (2011-2016)
In December 2011, lead singer Josh Homme announced that they were working on a studio album and would release it "in early 2012". This information was later specified more precisely, the album should be released in June.
On November 6, 2012 it was announced that Joey Castillo had left the band and that his predecessor Dave Grohl would act as studio drummer as in 2002, but Jon Theodore, a member of the bands Life Coach , One Day as a Lion and formerly , was to tour The Mars Volta . In addition, Trent Reznor and Elton John should participate on the album. … Like Clockwork was finally released on May 31, 2013. After a two-year tour, the band announced in 2015 that they would be taking a break.
Villains (from 2017)
At the beginning of 2017, Troy Sanders , who is linked to Queens of the Stone Age through the band Gone Is Gone , announced that a new album would be released later this year. The album was released on August 25 of the same year with the album title Villains .
