Trent Reznor (2008)

Michael Trent Reznor (born May 17, 1965 in Mercer, Pennsylvania ) is an American musician, composer, songwriter , singer, multi-instrumentalist , producer and Oscar winner. He publishes as part of his project Nine Inch Nails , in which he is supported by other musicians for recordings and live performances.

Biography and work

Reznor's parents divorced shortly after the birth of his sister Tera (* 1971). Trent Reznor spent much of his youth with his grandparents, who sent him, especially his grandmother, to piano lessons at the age of five. Until his late teens he seemed to be aiming for a career as a classical concert pianist . In high school he learned the saxophone and tuba and played in both a jazz and marching band . At the same time he came into contact with the theater and played in some school plays. When he discovered rock music, especially the glam rock music of the 1970s, it changed his ideas about music and he broke off piano lessons. 1983 Reznor began studying at Allegheny College with a focus on computer engineering , which he broke off later. This was followed by a time in Cleveland with temporary jobs in music studios and participating in some bands (e.g. Option 30 , Exotic Birds ).

In return for his work, he was able to spend a few hours in the recording studio working on his own material. He started writing songs and computerized sound editing for his first demo . Much like the musician Prince on his debut, Trent Reznor played all of the instruments for the demo recordings alone (this version was later released as a bootleg by Nine Inch Nails entitled Purest Feeling (1994)). Many of these first songs appear in a modified form on the Nine Inch Nails debut Pretty Hate Machine (1989). With the record deal with TVT Records , Trent Reznor began his career as a professional musician and the international success of Nine Inch Nails .

Reznor and his band first appeared in Germany in the early 1990s as support for Skid Row and Guns N 'Roses .

In 1992 Reznor founded the record label Nothing Records together with his former music manager John Malm, Jr. One reason for this step were negative experiences he had to make through his previous record labels. Marilyn Manson was the first artist to get a record deal with Nothing Records . Other bands such as Autechre , Pop Will Eat Itself , Squarepusher , Einstürzende Neubauten and The The published their music on this music label . In the fall of 2004, Trent Reznor announced the end of Nothing Records on the official Nine Inch Nails website.

During the five years between the nine-inch nails albums The Downward Spiral (1994) and The Fragile (1999), Trent Reznor struggled with depression, social anxiety, and writer's block . In addition, he suffered from the death of his grandmother. In the Fragile Era (circa 1999–2002), Reznor's cocaine and alcohol addiction became known. After rehab he got clean.

In 2006, Reznor played his first solo show at the Neil Young annual benefit concert Bridge School Benefit for children with physical disabilities . He played shortened versions of Nine Inch Nails songs.

Also in 2006, he spoke out in a video for the animal rights organization PETA against the fur industry , which kills cats and dogs for the manufacture of clothing.

Trent Reznor produced the late 2007 released album The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust by the American spoken word artist Saul Williams , which could be downloaded from the Internet for a voluntary payment . He said he was disappointed that only 18 percent of all downloaders would have paid.

In May 2009, Trent Reznor announced the engagement to his girlfriend Mariqueen Maandig. The couple married on October 17, 2009, and their son was born in mid-October 2010. In 2010 the two founded the band How to Destroy Angels together with Atticus Ross, who had already worked with Reznor on Nine Inch Nails . In May 2010, the first single A Drowning was released.

In 2010 Reznor composed the soundtrack for the film The Social Network by David Fincher with Atticus Ross . In 2011 he and Ross received the Oscar , the Golden Globe Award and the Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for the score . Reznor and Ross were also responsible for the soundtrack to Fincher's Delusion , for which they won the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Composed Soundtrack for Visual Media . The score for Gone Girl (2014) is the duo's third collaboration with David Fincher.

In 2010 he worked with Daniel Knauf on a television series adaptation of the nine-inch nails album Year Zero for HBO .

On November 9, 2012, the An Omen EP was released by Columbia Records .

Regarding the use of electronic equipment for personal creativity and inspiration, Trent Reznor stated in drummer Dave Grohl's 2013 documentary Sonic City,I've never seen it as something to be used to cheat your way through. I never used a sampler to make it sound like a real instrument. You can record sound with it, like tape, but you can edit it endlessly. You just have endless possibilities. "

Reznor has been Apple Music's Chief Creative Officer since 2015 .
