Portrait of an American Family ( English for " Portrait of an American Family ") is the debut album by the American rock band Marilyn Manson . It was released on July 19, 1994 on the labels Nothing Records and Interscope Records .

Trent Reznor served as executive producer on the album . He produced the songs with Marilyn Manson , with the support of music producers Alan Moulder and Sean Beavan.

Cover design

The album cover shows four characters with grim faces in a room. There is a woman and a man sitting on the sofa, drinking beer and smoking, and two children playing on the carpet in front of them. According to the album title, the characters should represent an American family. At the top of the picture is the green lettering Marilyn Manson and at the bottom the title Portrait of an American Family , also in green.

Portrait of an American Family was unable to place in the US album charts, but reached number 35 on March 25, 1995 on the Heatseekers charts , which list new artists.

On June 9, 1994, the first single Get Your Gunn was released. The second release, Lunchbox , was released on February 6, 1995. Both songs could not be placed in the charts.

Sales figures and awards

In 2003, Portrait of an American Family received a gold record for more than 500,000 sales in the United States . In the UK, the album was awarded a Silver Record in 2013 for over 60,000 copies sold.
