Singles & Videos
Four singles were released from the album . For the music video of the first single The Dope Show led Paul Hunter directed. The second single, I Don't Like the Drugs (But the Drugs Like Me), features a guitar solo by Dave Navarro . The third single, Rock Is Dead , is included in the soundtrack to the award-winning film Matrix by the Wachowskis from 1999. A music video was also produced for the fourth single Coma White .
Concept, style & cover artwork
Mechanical Animals is a concept album , similar to the previous and also the follow-up album and as such belongs to the conceptual trio of Antichrist Superstar - Mechanical Animals - Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Dead) . As part of this concept, the pieces on the album are each assigned to a “half” - called Alpha and Omēga .
Marilyn Manson made use of numerous stylistic elements and influences for the elaboration of the album, including music and appearance by David Bowie .
The cover designed by Joseph Cultice shows an androgynous Marilyn Manson who is completely white except for his red hair. Breast prostheses and white latex paint from Industrial Light & Magic were used for the photo . The cardboard slipcase in which the CD case is set is also printed with the cover image.
In an interview with the British radio program BBC - Rock Show with Daniel P. Carter , Marilyn Manson said in relation to the song The Speed of Pain in June 2018: "The text is a poem of mine that I wrote on an airplane I read an article in Time Magazine about how long it takes for a pain pulse from the body to reach the brain. That inspired me to write about something completely different. "
production
Unlike the two previous publications Portrait of an American Family and Antichrist Superstar was Nine Inch Nails - frontman Trent Reznor not involved in the production of the album. Instead, Manson worked with Michael Beinhorn , who was already responsible for the album production of rock bands such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Soundgarden .
